if you don't wanna read, ehhh that's fine i guess skip the teletyped part. :P the rest is okay.

but since i didn't feel like setting a shit-ton of text in a fancy manipulation, here's the print on these thingies and the dude who found them (who i also didn't feel like drawing) from some Bastaatian history book/publication.

ANCIENT WEAPONS: THE LISKH
These five liskha were discovered in the marsh region to the West. For five thousand years it had been contended that this valley was under the rule of the fabled Ox clan during the Marztinine period of Bastaatian human history. Both ancient and modern evidence, quieted for many centuries, now refutes this claim and the existence of several once-legendary cultures.

The liskha were unearthed by defamed archaeologist and historian Brozer Beltul circa 13.050~13.100. The exact date has been convoluted as most of Mr. Beltul's notes were scattered during his discreditation and much of what survived was later destroyed during the Nihilist period of the last two millenia.

This photo as well as the liskha themselves (which had deteriorated considerably since the photo was taken) survived the mass censor of thousands of years of Bastaatian history in a private collection. They were donated to the Museum's Repository of Artifacts in 16.440.

Archaeological discovery and historian speculation have provided some additional information now known about these artifacts, but most evidence is found in classical texts, now regarded historically.

The liskh was a thick, hiltless bladed weapon of solid iron construction. The iron was particularly heavy but substance testing yields no explanation for this; related, classical texts claim the Oxen had reduced the iron by unknown physical or "supernatural" means from blood and other organic substances, and shaped them by hand without melting or pouring. No liskh molds or forges have ever been discovered. There is no way to be certain of the construction process in our time.

One side of the weapon itself was usually blunted, providing devastating striking force. For this combination of uses, Marztinine Bastaatians referred to it as a Bull Axe in many of their texts, rather than the Ascellan term liskh which was cumbersome in their alphabet.

Humans attempted to duplicate its design, but the weight distribution made it awkward and difficult to wield even among heavily muscled warriors. To downsize its proportions left human engineers with a more conventional sword similar to the modern machete, and the grasping technique was bothersome to human hands. They abandoned the pursuit, but it is rumored that later designs contributed to the scimitar on Bastaat as well as other worlds.

S.1. A small liskh. A surviving sample of Beltul's notes, purportedly taken from direct interaction with a live Ascellus, dictate that this size and shape were used by Gerdaska, or child warriors in training. 1m in length.

S.2. A human reproduction inspired by the liskh's design, fitted with an interchangeable blade. This specimen also contributed to the discrediting of Beltul, under allegations that all of the items were human forgeries. Structural analysis has proved this false, on conflicting technological evidence during the period. 1.1m in length.

S.3. Another practical use liskh. Surface and corrosion analysis suggest that it was used to cut wood and other vegetable material. 1m in length.

S.4. A warrior liskh of a specialized shape. Possibly belonged to a King's guardsmen, as few other partial specimens have been found with any adornments. 1.2m in length.

S.5. Beltul claims this weapon belonged to the Ox King by personal testimony. He regarded it as a set; the companion has been traced to a private collection in Uhalan. The outer contour of the blade was square and blunted, while the inner contour was honed to razor fineness. Its great size and characteristic shape made it ideal for beheading men on horseback. It has been adorned with Elk molars. 2m in length.

A posthumous apology was made publicly to Brozer Beltul in 16.435 on behalf of the Bastaatian government for his imprisonment and execution. He is the first human being on record to have made peaceful communication with one of the cosmos' most notorious nonhumans. A bronze 5m monument of an artist's rendering of the historian greeting the Ox King stands in the former Hannusk Commons, renamed Beltul. Every other year, a religious group beheads the statue of the Ascellus and throw it into the ocean.

Despite arrests, date changes and the magnitude of the organization prolong the macabre tradition and other mischief is also common. The city of Marza adamantly opposes barricading the monument, to keep good spirit, and retrieves the head each year in a rather dutiful ceremony.

NOTABLE LISKH VICTIMS:
Kurutirum, Marztinine General (pretty classic headchop kill)
Tofilius Reas, Ox heir (gutfuck'd w/ angsty mouthbleeding)
Serbilian, the Elk King (field dressed for dinner)
...Tofilius Reas (dies twice htf?)
Tetizin IV, Bastaatian prince/general (another headchop, complete w/ parade)
Shamshuk, the Goat King (doesn't die, just "goes away")
Hamuska of Yazol, Holylfower priestess (the end?)
Samuel Zaruk, pawn shop owner (tried to sell Terry his own sword, gutfucked as well)
oh yeah and this guy.

used another texture i found for the paper: [link]
pen lineart, vector color/texture on the weapons themselves.

when i get my sub back and update the journal, this will go itno the Proyectopedia. i mentioned it in passing, but it turned out to be a good idea. :D

The way you wrote the history behind the weapons is pretty awesome, really. There's just enough back story for them, but also just enough of an enigmatic quality that really makes the "archaeological report" sound authentic.

it probably helps that i'm a documentary dork. they had this western humanities marathon on History Int. that was like six hours long. i tuned in right at the end of the Egyptians and i remember thinking "okay when we hit the French Revolution i'm gettin offa this train and going out for the night i swear"

i am... wow... really, really glad you read this. that anyone did. a lot of the writing i've been doing lately is more reference based. MUCH LESS that you liked it, it really means a lot.
:iconproyecto-loa:
thanks; the texture actually gave me a headache (too many options! which to choose!)
:icongolden-chicken:
I know what you mean, I'm a big documentary fan myself. I practically live on the History channel unless South Park is on. :B
I find ancient weapons and civilizations of particular interest, which might be the main contribution to why I like the writing here so much.

The art is good as well; the textures look cool on those weapons. I can't really think of any critiques for them though.

Wow damn. I agree with the comment above. The history of it is very interesting...especially the statue beheading each year. Even the list of victims adds alot to it (Tofilius dies twice? Wha?)

i've been spending a lot of time pondering concepts for the ancient world... what started as a little daydream/side story/"straight to video" part of my project is now a full-blown story arc. it's so refreshing to satisfy my desire for TRUE fantasy amid all the science-fiction crap that usually goes on. SO YES I HAD TO CREATE SWORDS FOR TERRY'S PEOPLE... and hopefully... ppl like them.

to the skull.

thanks for checkin it out tweest!
